The good people at Genesis lent me this Croix de Fer 30 to go and have a blast on, and go and have a blast I most certainly did!
I am now officially a convert to this bike. If you have been pondering buying a Croix de Fer/gravel bike but you're not sure if it's for you, I'm here to tell you, it probably is!
Coming to the bike with a roadie mentality, the first thing I had to adjust was my mindset. This bike is not about getting the highest possible average speed. It's about cruising along and taking in the surroundings. It's made from Reynolds 725 steel, and as such it's never going to be a featherweight bike, but it just doesn't matter.
Compared to my Orbea Avant, which is really comfortable in carbon race bike circles, the Croix de Fer is like a couch! It just floats along and feels so stable.
I wasn't sure where to head with it locally so I just headed out initially on the road then enjoyed the versatility of being able to point it at anything you'd never normally take a road bike near. The MTBrs amongst you could be thinking, ok, so that's just a MTB needed for that, but it's different, because it's more efficient on the road than a MTB and it allows me to enjoy my familiar roadie cycling position whilst exploring new areas.
Highlight of the ride was getting carried away with my self belief, riding through a forrest track, atremtping to smash through a huge muddy bog and finding myself quickly lying in a ditch as the front wheel got stuck, but hey, it was a soft landing and it was a lesson learned.
We always have a couple of Croix de Fer models in the shop. If you fancy a bit of adventure off the beaten track, pop into the store and we'll talk you through the range, meantime, I better go clean this up before reluctantly handing it back. ... See MoreSee Less
